Remote Access to Student UNIX hosts

This How-to is intended for: Undergraduates

Using ssh to remotely access the Unix / Linux systems from XP

Some UNIX hosts on the EECE student network can be accessed from outside the computer labs. These are PCs running Linux (tho they may reboot at any time) and the Sun workstations in Room 2.71 and Room G.50. The preferred method for interactive sessions/file transfer is using Secure Shell - SSH (man ssh for details)

Currently, the student computer labs can only be accessed from EECE Hosts. If you need to access these computers from outside the school's network (including SNAP), use SSH to first connect to us2.ee.uwa.edu.au and then connect to the individual machines thru there by ssh. You may find a utility called "screen" useful (man screen for more details), or running multiple SSH sessions into us2.

A good SSH client for Windows is putty, which is available as freeware from this site. Putty and it's other components are installed on all EECE student lab machines.
